Description:

An old rusty bike leaning up against an older overgrown rock fence outside a small village in Co Clare, Ireland, was the inspiration for the drawing Cherished Companion. The bike clearly had been there unmoved for many years. Likely, it was once used to travel the narrow winding road to the village about a mile away. Whose bike was it? What stories could be told about the travels they took? Did it hold memories of trips to the village for groceries, to meet friends at one of the pubs, Saturday dances at the little village hall and Sunday services at the lovely church? Why did its owner leave it there leaning against the wall, ready for the next ride to the village, which never came?
The rock walls of Ireland intrigue to me for their variety and textures. There were many different methods incorporated into the walls for going between fields while keeping livestock in. The steps built into the wall in this piece were only one means to cross over to the other side. Splotches of white lichen and ivy clinging and creeping in and around the stones spoke to the age of these structures. Walls disappeared completely covered by ivy, blackberry, and hawthorn. Then, further down the hedgerow the old stones emerged briefly before being gobbled up by more ivy.
The third component in this work came from the fields and pastures, green and sparkling after a shower, divided by hedgerows and rock walls, and sometimes dotted with cattle or sheep. They seemed to call out to be wandered through. An invitation to walk, think, and simply enjoy the beauty of the landscape accompanied always by the chorus of birdsong.
The story this work evokes is yours to create. For me it evokes the practical who left the bike and why, to the metaphysical the journey of this life and crossing over to the next.
